How to Maximize Your Electric Scooter Battery

How to Maximize Your Electric Scooter Battery Life

Electric vehicles and electric bikes aren't the only environmentally friendly transportation options generating buzz among commuters these days. For a more portable and affordable alternative to these electric rides, many are turning to personal electric scooters.

Electric scooters, designed for short rides around your neighborhood and long trips to work or school, fit a variety of lifestyles.

Here's everything you need to know about the battery life of electric scooters.

How Can I Make My Electric Scooter Battery Last Longer?

With the proper care, your electric scooter battery should last for a long period of time, even up to four years before you may need a replacement battery.

To maximize your scooter's battery life, follow these best practices:

  • Avoid overcharging
  • Store your scooter inside
  • Keep the battery charged if you plan to store your scooter
  • Park your scooter in a dry place

Avoid overcharging

That means only recharging your scooter when the battery is dead or close to being completely drained.

Store your scooter inside, especially during cold weather

The ideal temperature for lithium batteries is 80 degrees F/30 degrees C. If the temperature drops to 50 degrees F/10 degrees C, you can expect your e-scooter's range and performance to decrease by 30%. Below these temperatures, the decrease in performance may be even more dramatic.

Keep the battery somewhat charged if you plan on storing your e-scooter

It can be harmful to your lithium-ion battery to fully deplete it before storing it, so we recommend keeping your scooter's lithium battery charged at 40% at a minimum. It should be fully charged before you ride it again.

To help protect the scooter's battery from the elements while being stored, try to keep it at a climate-controlled temperature of 60 degrees F/16 degrees C.

Park your scooter in a dry place

While Unagi scooters are water-resistant, we don't recommend leaving them outside in the rain.

How Long Does an Electric Scooter Charge Last?

Unagi's Model One scooters offer a battery range of 15.5 miles on just one charge

Generally speaking, how long an electric scooter's charge lasts depends on factors like rider weight, number of charge cycles on the battery, and whether you ride it uphill.

The Model One's battery is rated to provide 70% of capacity after 500 complete charge/discharge cycles.

As you search for electric scooters with a great battery life that also offer quick, dependable charging times, the Model One from Unagi, available with a single electric 250-watt motor—the E250, and a dual 500-watt motor—the E500.

Both electric models offer the following battery and charging advantages:

A type of battery that's low-maintenance while packing a lot of power

Unagi Model One scooters contain a lithium battery (9000mah lithium-ion batteries). Lithium batteries tend to offer greater capacity, longer life cycles, and faster and more efficient charging compared to other options, like lead-acid batteries.

An impressive e-scooter battery life that promises serious riding range on a single charge

Depending on your daily commute, you may be able to go to work, happy hour, and back home again without a battery charge in between your stops.

Not only that, if you're searching for fast electric scooters, the Model One reaches a max speed of 15.5 miles per hour (mph), or 25 kilometers per hour (km/h). That top speed is roughly equivalent to the maximum speed the average cyclist can pedal per hour (on a non-electric bike or e-bike).

Keep in mind the average distance of 15.5 miles between charges you may be able to ride before needing a recharging session may decrease if you are operating your Model One in dual motor mode or if you're riding around hillier terrains.

Charging within hours

With the Unagi Model One, you can get a full charge within four to five hours, allowing you to go for long rides multiple times per day if needed.

Kick scooter option

Not to worry if your battery runs out—if you still have a way to go, the Model One can be used as a kick scooter if you can't charge up in time.

Each Model One comes with an original charger from Unagi, and you can always buy an extra charger if needed.
