Your cart is currently empty.
If you've finally taken the plunge and bought yourself a brand new electric scooter, we commend you on your investment!
But before you start zooming around town on your new electric scooter, there are a few gadgets you'll need to ensure you stay safe and your e-scooter remains secure.
So, what are the electric scooter accessories you don't want to leave home without?
Let's find out.
Before you hop online and buy all the accessories you can think of, it might not be necessary for you to have something just to be like the other electric scooter riders.
Some factors to consider when choosing the right accessories for your electric scooter:
The type of scooter you have will determine the types of accessories that are compatible with it. For example, if you have a folding scooter i.e. commuter scooters like the Unagi Model One, you'll want to choose accessories that are also foldable. This is because folding scooters are designed to be compact and portable, so you don't want to add accessories that make them bulky or difficult to fold.
Here are some examples of accessories that are compatible with folding scooters:
The terrain you'll be riding on will also affect the types of accessories you need. If you'll be riding on rough terrain, you'll need accessories that can provide more stability and traction, such as all-terrain tires or a suspension system.
Here are some examples of accessories that are useful for riding on rough terrain:
The amount of money you're willing to spend on accessories will also be a factor. There are a wide variety of accessories available, from inexpensive to high-end.
If you're on a budget, there are still a number of essential accessories that you can purchase, such as a helmet, lights, and a lock. However, if you're looking for more advanced accessories, such as a suspension system or all-terrain tires, you'll need to be prepared to spend more money.
It should go without saying, but, when choosing accessories, make sure that they're compatible with your scooter and that they meet your individual needs. It's also a good idea to read reviews before making a purchase.
Ultimately, the best way to choose the right accessories for your electric scooter is to consider your individual needs and budget. By taking the time to do your research, you can find the accessories that will make your rides safer, more comfortable, and more enjoyable.
So, let's get into it and review some of the best electric scooter accessories.
When we're talking about electric scooter safety, we're referring to both securing the scooter itself AND protecting your head and body from potential accidents.
While most electric scooters come with a few built in safety features, you'll want to take extra precautions to keep you safe out there.
These items are either essential electric scooter accessories or - at the very least - highly recommended.
Your own safety should be your number one priority, which is why you should always wear head protection, such as a motorcycle helmet, before you take your e-scooter to the streets. In fact, in some places, local laws require that you wear a helmet on an electric scooter at all times.
The type of helmet you'll need will depend on your speed and risk level. For example, consider the type of traffic you're likely to scoot in, the typical weather conditions and whether you'll be taking your scooter off-road.
A bicycle helmet can provide lightweight and comfortable protection if you're riding below 20 mph in reasonably safe conditions. On the other end of the spectrum is the e-bike or motorcycle helmet, which will provide you with more robust protection.
A good middle of the range option, if you're looking for something smaller but want more protection than a bicycle helmet, is a BMX helmet. These have higher impact ratings but tend to be more comfortable and better ventilated than an e-bike helmet.
If you've got a rep to protect and you don't want to look goofy riding your e-scooter with a supersized motorbike helmet on your head, we get that. But helmet safety is essential, and there are helmet types available that tick both the style box and the safety box.
For example:
The flagship Unagi helmet is designed to offer maximum safety while still adding some understated style to your riding experience. It's sleek, perfect for riders of all ages, and won't let you down.
This full-face helmet is ideal if you enjoy power riding. It will protect you when navigating rough terrain and has a fantastic design. Really, it looks like something you'd expect Batman to wear (if Batman had an electric scooter).
If you want to ride safely you need lights on your e-scooter. You might be able to see the other road users, but if they can't see you, you're in trouble.
Reflectors are OK, but you also need rear lights and front lights.
Take The Unagi, for example. It not only comes with a horn, but it has an LED headlight built into the magnesium alloy handlebar, and LED taillights.
With a 47-lumen front LED light, you'll have no problem seeing what's ahead of you, and the blinking red tail light will let other road users see you.
If you ride a different brand, check what lighting option your e-scooter has, and upgrade the lights to higher-powered LEDs if necessary.
While you're at it, for additional visibility, you could run LED strips along your electric scooter, they don't just increase visibility, they also look amazing too. With lots of colors to choose from including red, green, and purple, you can customize your electric scooter to your exact taste.
Just make sure your other lights are performing well because while LED strips look impressive, they won't let other road users see you until they're close up.
Safety clothing should never be underestimated because it could save your life. Just as helmets are essential, we always recommend riders equip themselves with at least basic safety clothing gear.
What type of clothing are we talking about? Let's take a look at the different types of safety clothing so you can understand which might be best for your needs.
A safety vest is ideal for electric scooter riders because it's not heavy and can improve your visibility. Some vests have built in LED lights that make it easy for other road users to see you, and while they might not look attractive - they certainly enhance your safety.
Body armor is popular with motorcycle riders because it protects the body from damage should there be an accident. While armored jackets can be a bit heavy for electric scooter users, they can be beneficial if you do a lot of off-roading.
If you don't fancy full on body armor, opt for an armored vest instead - they're lighter to wear, while still highly beneficial.
Gloves don't just keep hands warm, they help protect your hands and fingers too, should you have an accident.
Bear in mind though, if you're going on longer rides, holding onto the scooter handlebar for ages might cause blisters which can irritate your hands. By wearing gloves, you can protect your hands and prevent cuts or scratches should you fall.
While some people prefer motorcycle gloves, regular bike gloves will offer more comfort and protect your hands. There are some excellent choices available, but one that stands out is the 100 Brisker gloves, which provide solid grips and are incredibly comfortable to wear.
Knee and elbow pads are classed as recommended but not necessary. However, we disagree! If you've ever had experienced breaking your elbow or knee, you'll know how painful it is.
Broken bones are avoidable if you use the proper protection, and pads are the best way to protect yourself. We recommend EVA padded material for comfort, while pads with a harder outer shell protect your bones.
If you do decide to use knee and elbow pads, it's best to choose an option that provides both durability and comfort. Skate Hut has an excellent collection, for example. Buying pads made explicitly for skaters is a good idea because people who use skateboards often fall - so you can guarantee they'll protect you on your e-scooter.
The only way to make sure all your scooter parts stay secure is to keep your e-scooter with you at all times. The Unagi scooter, for example, is lightweight and foldable, which makes it easy to transport wherever you go.
However, sometimes you don't want to carry your scooter with you. Sometimes you do need to lock it up, in which case the best way to secure your electric scooter is with cable locks or chain locks.
We recommend a cable lock or U-lock with a 10 cm by 15 cm internal diameter.
In general, the more money you spend on the lock, the more secure it is. Saying that, no lock is 100% thieve proof, but if you've bought a decent lock, even the most experienced thieves will give up!
If you're looking for a sturdy lock that won't let you down, the Hexband Ottolock has six inches of stainless steel, which makes cutting through the lock almost impossible.
Ok, so that's the safety and security accessories element covered. What accessories exist to make your scooting life that little bit easier?
Let's take a look.
It's always a good idea for e-scooter riders to keep one charger at home and carry another with them.
You might be covering a lot of ground with your electric scooter on a given day, or you might have forgotten to charge it overnight. Either way, you need to get out of the red zone.
Thankfully, the Unagi battery charger, for example, is lightweight and won't take up too much space in your bag. Charge your e-scooter at work, your favorite coffee shop, or anywhere else with a working outlet.
It's easy to fold down an Unagi Model One and carry it when you're not riding. But what if your hands are full? Whether you're lugging a box of donuts to the office or bringing wine to a dinner party, having a carrying strap for your e-scooter can make all the difference when it comes to convenience.
The best thing about our electric scooters is their low weight. Being light means they're easy to move around, and with the right carry satchel, you won't even feel the extra weight!
Just swing it over your shoulder and go about your trip.
If you're after a hands-free way to follow your GPS navigation, we recommend you invest in a phone holder that attaches to the handlebar. Having one of these in place will allow you to glance at your turn-by-turn directions while keeping your eyes on the road.
While phone holders are highly beneficial, you should only use your mobile for navigation. Electric scooters are easy to use, but whether you're riding off-road or on public roads, using your phone can be distracting.
We'd never encourage anyone to ride in the rain, but it's unavoidable if you use an electric scooter for commuting.
So, while you can't always keep your e-scooter dry, a waterproof backpack will protect your essential items, such as phones, wallets, and anything you don't want to get water damaged.
Our Expedition Backpack, for example, is perfect for off-road riding and won't let you down even if you should zip through a puddle. Take it with you on those long rides, and enjoy every moment of the experience.
If you're not comfortable riding your e-scooter and wearing a backpack, take a tech pouch with you instead. It keeps your essential accessories dry and doesn't take up too much space.
Pneumatic tires are filled with air, which provides a cushion between the tire and the road. This cushion helps to absorb bumps and vibrations, making for a smoother ride. However, pneumatic tires are also more susceptible to flats than solid tires.
If you have an electric scooter with pneumatic tires, it is important to have a tire pump with you in case you experience a flat tire. A tire pump can be used to inflate the tire and get you back on the road.
If you are going to be riding your electric scooter in areas where you are likely to experience flats, such as on rough terrain or in areas with a lot of debris, it is a good idea to have a tire pump with you at all times. This will help to ensure that you can get back on the road quickly and safely if you experience a flat tire.
In addition to the high-quality accessories mentioned above, you might also want to deck out your electric scooter with a reflective sticker, rearview mirror, water bottle holder, or hanging bag.
With the right electric scooter and the right accessories, you can safely and easily explore your city while making the most of your time on the road.
So buckle your helmet, set up your smartphone holder, and enjoy the ride!
